- Fonts
All of these fonts are free of charge; the licenses allow free redistribution and use.- Dark Courier, a superior monospaced option for submitting works on paper; Windows TrueType, 162kb (reg/ital/bold/bold ital). It doesn't look that much different on screen, but it's worlds easier to read on paper than standard Courier (which is quite possible the worst commonly used typeface design for readability). Retrieved from Hewlett-Packard.
- Bookman Old Style, a superior proportional option for editing and (when appropriate) submitting works on paper; Windows TrueType, 378kb (reg/ital/bold/bold ital). Distributed with Microsoft Office97.
- Garamond, a superior proportional option for editing and (when appropriate) submitting works on paper; Windows TrueType, 361kb (reg/ital/bold). Distributed with Microsoft Office97.
- Georgia, a superior proportional option for online work; Windows TrueType, 372kb (reg/ital/bold/bold ital). Retrieved from Microsoft.
- Verdana, a superior proportional sanserif option for online and onscreen work; Windows TrueType, 332kb (reg/ital/bold/bold ital). Retrieved from Microsoft.
- World-Construction Data and Programs
- Near and Major Stars from the Gliese (1989) and Yale catalogs; 16kb. This is an Excel97 worksheet with distance and three-dimensional coordinates (in parsecs), spectral type, and location for the nearest 60 stars and a few other highly visible stars.
- The Gleise III (1989) catalogs of stars; 442kb. This is an Excel97 worksheet with similar data (where available) for the entire Gleise III catalog of visible stars.
- Miscellaneous Writing Software
Again, these are all free of charge.- FreeZip is a free Australian file compression/decompression utility. If you don't already have one, consider FreeZipthere's no registration fee. The actual download links are at the bottom of the referenced page.
- Aladdin Expander (freeware) and DropStuff (shareware) are a matched pair of free zip utilities for Windows systems. As a bonus, they also deal with Mac compressed-file formats. (Aladdin also provides native Mac stuff, for those of you still using toy computers. ;-)
- EditPad is tough to beat as a free (ok, it costs one postcard) text editor. In fact, this entire website was done using EditPad, instead of some fancy-schmancy html editor with more bells and whistles than speed or reliability.
- the fine print first (you'll need to replace "{at}" with "@" on the address line). Please come back soon.
